Kosher Food is the food that is prepared for the Jewish people. This means that the food has not came from uncleaned animal. Therefore, it is fit for the Jewish people to eat. The three most popular Kosher dishes are Kreplach, cholent, kugel, latke, and kishka. Kreplach is a stuffed pasta dish that is better known as a dumpling. Cholent is the Jewish equivalent to a stew. It is usually cooked for several hours or overnight. Kugel was first cooked over eight hundred years ago. It is a dessert that is a lot like bread pudding. Latke is better known as a potato pancake. Kishka is a sausage that is made of pig’s blood. All of the Kosher food has to follow all of the legal guidelines of the Jewish people. All of these guidelines are based on the bible. The animals that the Jewish people are allowed to eat from are deer, sheep, and goats. They are not allowed to eat pig or rabbit. The Jewish people are also allowed to eat some birds like chicken, ducks, goose, and turkey. In order for the Jewish people to be able to eat any type of fish, the fish needs to have fins and the scales have to be easily removed. So the only fish they can eat is tuna, carp, or herring. The Jewish people are not allowed to eat their fish and meat together or their milk and meat together. When the Jewish people eat processed food then it must be prepared with the rabbi in the room. All of the poultry and meat have some strict guidelines to be eaten. The main thing is that the animal has to be slaughtered without feeling any pain. The people who slaughter the animal have to be trained to do this and once this is done then another set of people will come in to ensure that the animal is pure. This also means that this person will remove all of the blood, nerves, and fat from the animal. All of the kitchens of the Jewish people have to be separated. This means that the pots and pans that cooked milk or meat cannot be used to cook anything else. Plus this also means that none of these dishes can be washed together. They all have to be washed separately. This is why most of the time, you will find two sinks or dishwasher in a Kosher kitchen. This just means things a lot easier on the cook. But if they do not have these things, then they will just use separate wash buckets. The dishes then have to be put into different racks and dried with a different dishtowel too.

Now, depending on how much your going to drink, you’ll have to decide between hand blenders, or full sized blenders. I tend to eat a big breakfast which is when I have my shakes, so I go for the full sized blender. The bamix hand blender is a good one, if you don’t like having to clean up from a big blender every day.My favorite shake, is a rasberry banana shake. I combine a cup of milk, a scoop of my favorite whey protein, 3 full sized ice cubes, a heaping cup of frozen rasberries, and one banana. I used to use fresh rasberries, but decided I liked the frozen thicker results you get with the frozen ones. Where I live, they end up being about half the price as well. A word of caution when it comes to the whey protein. If you find one you like, make sure you stick with it. I thought I’d try a different brand last time, and was less than thrilled with the taste. The original one had artificial sweetener in it, but the new one has higher salt content, and it shows in the taste.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with replacing the whey protein with natural peanut butter. It seemed like a great idea, but at first it tasted a little funny. I had made just a plain peanut butter smoothie before, and liked it, but it had honey in it. When I added the honey to the raspberry / banana / peanut butter smoothie it was much better. Not as good as I thought it would be, but that’s why I keep experimenting.

For me, a couple of those smells are coffee and fresh baked bread. And to be quite honest, I only like the taste of one of them. I never have been, never will be a coffee drinker. I know that puts me in a bit of a minority, but I just never really acquired a taste for the drink. Fresh bread however is a totally different thing. Usually it’s the whole grain and multigrain and whole-wheat sort of bread so I really enjoy. Occasionally I will have white breads, if its sourdough or something with a little extra topping on it.

I think a lot of those smells are ingrained in us from an early early age. We usually associate them with good memories are happy times. But parents used to be coffee drinkers when I was younger, but eventually they converted over to being teetotalers. And I think the fresh baked bread smell love affair I still enjoyed to this day came about from my grandmother. She was always breaking all sorts of things. Not too many people do it from scratch the way she used to. But if you’re interested in re-creating the taste and smell of fresh bread in your home, modern breadmakers are pretty handy things to have. I’ve been taking a look at some breadmaker reviews as of late, as I think it would be an interesting thing to try.

No, this isn’t a post about weight loss. Neither is this a post that promotes a kosher diet (because there isn’t a “kosher diet”, per se). Keep in mind that kosher is not a dietary revolution. Nor is it something formulated by weight loss centers or physicians who aim to help people lose the extra pounds. Eating kosher means adhering to the kashrut (dietary laws) stipulated in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, found in the Torah. Eating kosher is considered a way of life by many Jews.

The kashrut specifies only what types of food are considered fit and unfit for consumption. The kashrut is a set of dietary laws followed by a specific community of people (the Jews), and its origins and purposes are still debated to this day. These laws were not written to give information about caloric intake or to fulfill a person’s recommended daily allowance for essential nutrients.

Back to the question: Is eating kosher healthier? Yes or no?

Yes, eating kosher could be healthier. When we look closely at what foods are kosher, we will find that most of them are whole foods. Beef, fish with scales, turkey, and potatoes have not undergone any processing. Whole foods have numerous advantages over processed foods; nutritionists and dieticians will also tell you that. So there is a greater chance that kosher foods are healthier for us.

Just consider the difference between eating a turkey sandwich and eating a ham and cheese sandwich. Surely, you can tell that turkey sandwich is low in calories and saturated fat when compared with the ham and cheese. Pork is considered non-kosher; ham is processed pork. With any processed meat, you get preservatives and trace chemicals that can have harmful side effects when taken over extended periods of time. One other thing: For your turkey sandwich to be considered kosher, it should be without cheese (one condition for kosher food is that meat and dairy products should not be mixed). Therefore, without the cheese, your turkey sandwich will be lower in calories.

However, eating kosher does not solely guarantee good health. You may think that you are on the safe side of the scale because you are eating kosher foods, but if you don’t watch your serving portions or if you live a sedentary lifestyle, nothing you eat will make a difference. In order to be truly healthy, you still have to live an active, stress-free life–where you obtain the right amount of rest and exercise, as well as follow a balanced diet (whether it’s kosher or not).

Perhaps your day’s schedule is packed that you barely have time to prepare a kosher snack. Here are some suggestions for quick kosher snacks that you can serve in a pinch when guests come for a visit or when you need some comfort food. Each requires minimum preparation time, offering more convenience and lesser stress on your part.

Apples With Honey Dip

Any fruit that did not undergo any chemical processing is considered kosher. For honey, use the type obtained from bees. To prepare the apple-honey snack: Wash the apples carefully, then cut them into wedges and remove the seeds. Sprinkle lemon juice over the apple wedges to prevent browning. Arrange the apples on a serving platter, and serve with a bowl of honey on the side.

Popcorn

With popcorn, you can still serve snacks even if you only have a few minutes to spare. It is filling and is low on calories. Skip the butter for a snack that is truly parve.

Smores

Many ingredients for smores are kosher. Choose brands carefully (look for the heksher seal). For a truly indulgent snack, prepare graham crackers, chocolate chip cookies, and marshmallows (try Marshmallow Fluff, which is kosher). Arrange the graham crackers in a layer on a microwave-safe dish. Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top. Place in the microwave and heat on high for about 45 seconds. Take out of the microwave once the chocolate chips have melted. Then, working quickly, sprinkle the marshmallow fluff over the melted chocolate and place a layer of graham crackers on top of the marshmallow and chocolate. Do not forget to serve with a big smile. It’s something to serve in addition to sending flowers or handing out gourmet gift baskets.

Latke

Although latke is a traditional Hanukkah dish, you can still serve it for other occasions. To prepare the dish, you have to first peel and grate potatoes. Immediately place the grated potato in a bowl of cold water. This stops the oxidation that causes browning. After that, drain and squeeze excess water from grated potatoes. In a separate bowl, beat eggs, add salt, and then the potatoes. Pour oil in frying pan set over medium-high fire. When oil is hot enough, lower fire and then drop 1/4 cup portions of the potato mixture onto the pan. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Then, do the same for the rest of the mixture. Latke is best served hot.

Fruit Smoothies

These smoothies are perfect refreshments during warm days. You can choose any type of fresh or frozen fruits (not preserves). Add plain yoghurt or milk. Blend together until smooth. Pour into tall glasses and then serve.

It is crucial to remember that eating kosher is not a fad or an ethnic preference but a conscious choice of eating according to Jewish dietary laws called kashrut (what is proper or appropriate for consumption). The primary principles of what would be considered kosher include the separation of meat and dairy products; avoidance of all meats considered unfit; the non-consumption of food that contains blood; and the use of exclusive cooking utensils when cooking kosher food.

If you wish to serve kosher meals for your family–perhaps during the holidays or as part of your weekly menu–here are some food ideas to help you get started. Some of these dishes have Biblical significance and are usual fare during Jewish holidays. The other dishes are ultimate kosher comfort foods.

Hamantashen

Perhaps the name originally meant “Haman’s pockets” (Haman tash). This triangular pastry is usually filled with sweetened poppy seeds. This pastry is usually served during Purim, in reference to Haman, the villain who persecuted but was defeated by the Jews in the story of Esther.

Kreplach

This is another fare commonly served during Purim or before the fast of Yom Kippur. The kreplach is a tiny meat-filled dumpling that is usually boiled and served up in chicken broth. They resemble like tortellini or wontons. Kreplach can also be made with stuffed vegetables and served in a broth that does not contain any meat products, and can be considered as vegetarian fare.

Challah

This special braided bread is a common staple during Sabbath and holidays. Challah symbolizes the manna that fell from the heavens during the Jews’ exile in the desert after they were freed from the clutches of the Pharaoh.

Charoset

Its pasty, hunky texture recalls the mortar used by Hebrew slaves to bond the bricks that they used to build the monuments of Pharaoh. This sweet dish is usually made with nuts, wine, honey, and fruits. It is usually served during Passover Seder. The term “charoset” originated from the Hebrew word “cheres”, which means clay.

Matzah Ball Soup

Matzah balls are dumplings made from ground matzo. The balls are prepared by hand and then dropped into a pot of boiling broth (usually chicken broth). This is considered a comfort food, which can be eaten at any time of the year. However, matzah ball soup is also usually served during Passover Seder.

Latke

This is also popularly known as potato pancake, and is usually served during Hanukkah. Despite their popularity, not many stores or restaurants in Israel offer them. They are usually made at home and are shared by the family during the Hanukkah meal.

Actually, wines are inherently kosher, but for them to remain kosher, the winemaking process has to be handled by a Sabbath-observant Jew. Although most restaurants now serve meshuval wine, considering that it can be handled by even a non-observant Jew or even by a person who is not a Jew (yeah, religion does have its quirks), it is definitely not the type of wine we’d recommend if you are looking for kosher vintage.

The old method of producing meshuval wine — boiling the juice of grapes in a big pot or tank — did not improve the wine’s taste. Boiling wine even ruined the wine’s potential for prolonged storage. Flash heating was recently developed to limit the damaging effects that the process of boiling imparts to the taste, aroma, and overall quality of the wine. There are numerous kosher wines available these days, meshuval and non-meshuval alike, and many are of high quality. Nevertheless, you will not find any meshuval wine on our list today. Here are the (non-meshuval) kosher wines that we are happy to recommend as wonderful complements to your meals:

Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon from Golan Heights Winery (Israel/Galilee, 1999) — Won the Silver Medal at the Vintitaly International Wine Competition in 2006. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. It looks very heavy, with its purple-black hue. It has a flavorful combination of black cherry, tobacco, plum, and smoke that becomes a medley in the mouth. It goes well with steak and will also be a wonderful complement for any pasta dish.

Domaine du Castel Grand Vin from Domaine du Castel Winery (Israel/Judean Hills, 2002) — Appeals to those who gravitate toward Bordeaux wines. It is garnet colored, and its rich, fruity complexity is filled with the flavors of blackberry, currants, and plum combined with the undertones of smoky cedar, leather, and tobacco. This wine goes well with meat dishes.

Yarden Merlot Ortal Vineyard from Golan Heights Winery (Israel/Upper Galilee, 2001) — The folks at Golan Heights truly know their kosher wines! This wine was aged in French oak barrels for 14 years and is 2001 schmita sanctified. It has a luscious crimson color with a tinge of gold at the rim. It is very dry (which is perfect for a Merlot) and creates a flavorful explosion of blackberry, plum, licorice, oak, and spices, subtly underscored by the earthiness of mushroom. This wine emphasizes the flavors of a spicy meat dish.
